Texas Youth Hunting

My son just completed the hunter's educations and is looking to get involved with Texas Youth Hunting Program.  Is there a minimum caliber rifle that is allowed on the youth hunts? We went to the shooting range and he shot both a .243 and a.223. He is able to handle the .243 but said he felt more comfortable with .223.  I just don't want to get him a rifle that he will not be able to use in the program.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

For the hunt i went .243 was the minimum caliber rifle you could bring, I personally use a .270 but have heard nothing but good things about a .243.  I assume that the .243 is minimum for all the hunts because it was on mine.  The .243 should be fine for him and easy to get used to.
You should not go any smaller than .243. While proper shot placent is of the utmost importance, .243 is permitted virtually everywhere, while some areas do not permit .22 in either tongued or centerfire.  I have found no child of  9 years or older, that when properly introduced to the .243, has not been able to handle it.  If your child insists that the .243 is too much for him, then I recommend waiting until he grows a bit instead of letting him hunt with too little rifle.
